Due to debt because of land becoming infertile sold family farm around 1897, and began working in mines while family run fruit and vegetable business in Moonta.
Bought property c.1905 in Carey's Gulley, near Adelaide, despite hard work, the infertile ground made life difficult. After working in Wallaroo Mines 1907 moved to Mildura, Victoria. Emily opened Glanville's Mid-wifery Nursing Home which was a busy and successful enterprise.
In 1915 Samuel and son Herbert farmed land at Cowangie, North West Victoria but with drought and rabbit infestation it was a difficult life. Samuel stayed on the farm until his death chasing a steer.
